We’re all finished at our Oldland Common site near Bristol and our drone pilot has been over to the site to get some final footage of the site.
January 2024
The site team has achieved significant progress on the improvement works to the Chief Trading Post site since May and have successfully completed phases 1-3 which has included the completion of the new junction to the entrance of the development site and the construction of a new substation within the site. They have also installed a new highway drain system from the junction of Oakleigh Gardens along Barry Road, including new gullies, and installed and connected foul and surface water manholes on Barry Road and into the site. The community will have also seen the construction of a new footpath leading to the newly installed bus stop and shelter on Barry Road (South bound), new street lighting columns have also been put in place.
April 2023
The first phase of works will be commencing on 15th May and will consist of connecting foul and surface water manholes on Barry Road into the site. We will require 3-way temporary traffic lights on the junction of Barry Road and Oakleigh Gardens for approximately 3 weeks.

Information
Montel Civil Engineering has been appointed by Oldland Common LLP as the main contractor to carry out improvement works to the Chief Trading Post site, which is required for future development. The project consists of improvement to the existing highway, as well as off-line infrastructure works within the site and works will be commencing on Monday 15th May. The works were originally due to commence on 2nd May but were delayed due to National Grid overrunning on their works on the same section of road.
- The scope of the works include:
- Construction of a new junction on the entrance to the development site
- Realignment of kerbs and new tactile paved crossed at the junction of Oakleigh Gardens
- Coordination of utilities into the site including high and low voltage electric, water and BT and Fibre.
- Construction of a new substation within the site
- Installing a new bus stop and shelter on Barry Road (South Bound)
The works will be undertaken in 4 different phases which will require temporary traffic signals.

FAQ
When will the work start and when is completion expected?
Montel will take possession of the site on Monday 15th May and we anticipate the works will be completed by mid-October 2023.
What days/times will Montel be working?
Works will be undertaken between 7.30am to 5.00pm Monday to Friday with plant being operational from 8am. There may be occasions where we need to work beyond these hours in order to complete specific activities. There are currently no weekend or night works planned, however, this may be required towards the end of the project when surfacing works are completed.
Will there be a lot of noise, dust and mud and how will this be avoided?
Whilst our modern fleet of plant is fitted with effective exhaust silencers, it will be operated in such a manner as to minimise noise and carbon emissions. Regular noise monitoring will be undertaken through the day and acoustic barriers will also be used where necessary. There will be some activities where dust is unavoidable and these operations will be strictly controlled and appropriate water-suppression measures put in place prior to commencement. The site team will also ensure the cleanliness of the works locations and access roads to sites. Road sweepers will be available at regular intervals where necessary.
How will the traffic be controlled?
In order to provide safe environments for both members of the public and our own workforce, there will be traffic management implemented as detailed in our newsletter. All measures will have been agreed with the South Gloucestershire Highways team prior to implementation— and it will be inspected daily by our specialist traffic management contractor.
