Montel Civil Engineering has been appointed by Gloucestershire County Council as the main contractor to deliver the next phase of the Gloucester City Centre Cycle Improvements on Northgate and Southgate Street. This scheme is a key part of the counties cycle spine, enhancing the cycling and walking network, reducing carbon emissions and creating a safer environment for pedestrians and cyclists.
The scheme includes:
Northgate Street (Spread Eagle Road to The Oxebode)
Southgate Street (Ladybellegate Street to Tall Ship Pub)
A Meet the Contractor event was held on Wednesday 5th March at St John’s Northgate Methodist Church. The event provided an opportunity to meet the project team from Montel, Atkins and Gloucestershire County Council and learn more about the project and schedule of works. We’d like to thank everyone who attended and made it a successful event.
When will work start and when is completion expected?
Montel will commence works on Monday 10th March and completion is expected late Autumn 2025.
What will working hours/days be?
Works will be undertaken between 07:30am and 18:00pm (dependent on the time of year) Monday to Friday, and occasional weekend working may also be required.
Night works will also be required at different stages of the project, and it is anticipated that ‘noisy’ work such as breaking, cutting and planing of the existing carriageway will be undertaken at the start of the shifts to minimise any potential disruption caused by these activities.
Will access to my property/business be maintained during the works?
Access to properties in the work areas should be maintained at all times. However, at times there may be short delays if we are required to move plant or machinery.
If there is a period where access may be difficult to maintain, such as during road closures or surfacing works, we will notify you in advance.
Will pedestrian access be maintained?
We will aim to maintain pedestrian access throughout the works, but there may be temporary footpath closures required. In such causes, if practicable, an alternative diversion route will be provided.
How will you avoid creating excessive noise/pollution/dust and mud during construction?
Regular noise monitoring will be undertaken, and our modern plant fleet is fitted with effective exhaust silencers to minimise noise emissions. During any overnight works, it is anticipated that ‘noisy’ work will be undertaken at the start of the shift to minimise any potential disruption, with acoustic barriers being used if necessary.
To reduce the production of dust we will eliminate cutting in the first place. However, there will be activities where production of dust is unavoidable. These operations will be strictly controlled and the necessary and appropriate water suppression measures put in place prior to commencements. Road sweepers will also be used when required to suppress dust and mud and to ensure the cleanliness of the existing carriageway is maintained.
