Evesham Road, Stratford Upon Avon

We have now diverted the traffic onto the new roundabout. This is still being controlled with the use of temporary traffic signals. The traffic signals are in place to ensure that the area is safe for both the public and our workforce.

Following the Christmas break, we will be continuing with the works on what was the old carriageway. This will include realigning and replacing of the old kerb lines, installation of the final section of culvert units and service diversions.

We have now installed the majority of the offline kerbs and are installing the edgings to form the footways. This is to enable the road and footways to have bituminous material added at the same time, to make it safe for everybody when the traffic management is adjusted to use the newly constructed carriageway.

The new culvert that crosses Evesham Road is now installed to the halfway point of Evesham Road. The services will now need to be installed onto the top of the new sections of culvert. This will enable us to install the northern half of culvert because currently the existing services are going to clash with the proposed units.

There are no imminent changes being proposed to the traffic management.

We are making good progress with the off-line works that do not directly affect the main B439 Evesham Road. This includes the installation of the first culvert, the roundabout and the new leg that ties in with Luddington Lane. We will shortly be proceeding with the second culvert unit which extends across Evesham Road. Following on from this, the service diversions which are pivotal to the programme of works will commence.

This contract provides another example of Montel’s ability to carry out complex highways and traffic management schemes in full collaboration with Warwickshire County Council. The project is a strategic roundabout on one of the principal routes into Stratford-upon-Avon and whilst providing a new access into an adjacent housing development, it will also enhance the ability of traffic to access the town centre without having to use small local villages as an alternative route.

The existing Shottery Brook is being diverted under the new carriageway, and Montel are working closely with the Environment Agency to ensure that all necessary protective measures are implemented, and that the flora and fauna associated with this watercourse are fully protected. The diversion has been designed to utilise two large culvert sections, with a flood attenuation area also being constructed that will reduce the risk of flooding in the area in the future.

The main construction works comprise of:

• Significant diversion works to the existing utilities along the B439 in order to facilitate the new roundabout.
• Modifications to the existing drainage system.
• Installation of an attenuation crate system to store storm water before it is released into the drainage network.
• Installation of an oil interceptor and hydrobrake system to clean and control the water out-falling into the water system.
• Installing large culvert units to accommodate the potentially large quantity of water flowing down Shottery Brook. These include mammal tunnels to allow wildlife to cross the new carriageway without danger.
• Re-alignment of the Shottery Brook to accommodate the new carriageway.
• Excavation of a flood compensation area to reduce the risk of flooding in the local area.
• Re-aligning the B439 to suit the newly constructed roundabout.
• Construction of a new roundabout which will also provide access into a new housing development.
• Upgrading of the existing driveway entrances to form private driveways for the existing houses.
• Upgrading the Luddington Lane to reduce traffic movement along the front of the frontages.
• Creation of a new uncontrolled pedestrian crossing point on the B439 with a pedestrian refuge island at all 4 roundabout exits.
• Installation of grasscrete maintenance bay.
• Installation of a new street lighting system to illuminate the new carriageway.

The phasing and sequencing of this scheme has been particularly challenging due to the complexity of the utility diversions and their interaction with the large culvert units – whilst also ensuring our works do not disrupt traffic, cyclists and pedestrians wishing to use this busy length of road.

Why are the works needed?

The land to the north of Evesham Road is being developed for housing. The roundabout is an important strategic scheme to both create a new access into the parcel of land and to reduce the traffic going through the Shottery in Stratford-upon-Avon. This scheme will also reduce the flood risk in the area and will protect numerous properties from flooding.

How long will the work take?

The project began in February 2022 and (with the current scope) is expected to be completed the summer of 2023.

Will there be a lot more traffic?

Unfortunately, but through necessity, we will need to have a significant number of deliveries made to site in order to provide the materials required to construct the works. It is our intention to use the most local suppliers we can in order to achieve this, but it will mean numerous additional vehicles will have to access and egress our site.

As part of the scheme 3-way lights are needed for the duration of the works. This will unfortunately create delays on both the Evesham Road and Luddington Road. These are necessary to enable both the workforce and the public to be kept safe during the works.

How will the traffic be controlled?

In order to provide safe environments for both members of the public and our own workforce, there will be extensive traffic management implemented along the B439 and Luddington Road. All measures will have been agreed with the Warwickshire County Council Highways teams prior to implementation – and it will be inspected (at least twice) daily by our specialist traffic management contractor.

What days will Montel be working?

Generally, Monday to Friday 7:30am to 6pm, and Saturdays between 07.30 and 13.00 – although there may be occasions where we need to work beyond this in order to complete specific activities. Limited works will be undertaken on Bank Holidays or Sundays.

Will there be a lot of mud, noise and dust?

Dust and noise are levels are monitored throughout the day. Our machinery has the latest technology in noise suppression, and the type of works required should produce minimal dust. We will be carrying out regular cleaning of the roads to ensure that these are kept as clean as possible at all stages of the infrastructure construction.
