July 2023
- The installation of 440 metres of sheet piling has now been successfully completed ahead of schedule.
- The site team are now in the process of reconstructing the area of road that has been affected by the sheet piling and are also preparing the existing footway from Severn Springs to Lilley Brook Golf course for resurfacing.
- On the 4th August, Montel will be handing the site over to Gloucestershire County Council to enable the surfacing works to be completed (please continue to adhere to the road closure and the diversion route during this time) and we anticipate the works will be complete and the road reopened by the end of September.
May 2023
The installation of sheet piles is now underway, and we have installed over half of the length of the sheet piles (total length of sheet pile wall is 440 metres).
Over the next month, we will be continuing with the installation of the sheet pile wall, repairing the existing damaged drains near the footpath and replacing the storm drainage, replacing manholes and begin the clearance on the south west footpath.
April 2023
The Project Manager, Steve Draper and site team have been making positive progress since Montel took possession of the site on Monday 20th March. The site compound is now in place at the Northern end of the closure and the full site area has been secured with fencing and gates.
The site team are in the process of undertaking the preparation works which has involved site and vegetation clearance and diverting the existing utility services, which is essential to protect the utilities during sheet piling operations.
Over the next few weeks, the service diversion works will be complete ready for our piling contractor to arrive on site from week commencing 24th April. The main piling works will then commence at the end of April.
Please note that there is a full road closure in place at all times and vehicles must use the signed diversion route whilst this is in effect. The closure is also in place for pedestrians and cyclists with signage at each end of the road closure advising that the footway and carriageway are closed, we please ask that this is adhered to for your safety.
Information
Montel Civil Engineering has been engaged by Gloucestershire County Council as the main contractor to undertake the safety improvement works to the A435 between Charlton Kings and the Seven Springs roundabout.
This section of the A435 has been subject to ongoing ground movement and cracking of the road surface resulting in the southbound crawler lane being partially closed and temporary repairs being carried out. The aim of the works is to prevent further ground movement and maintain safety for all road users using this route in the future.
The works will consist of:
- Installation of a sheet pile wall in the verge of the southbound carriageway for slope stabilisation
- Preparation works including the diversion of utility services and sewer
- Drainage repairs to the existing highway drain
- Footway improvement and resurfacing parts of the carriageway
- Reinstating the crawler lane which will be partially used as a safe zone for non motorised vehicles

Will the road be closed and how will this affect my journey?
Due to the construction activities and for Montel to undertake these works safely, there will be a road/footway closure in place for the duration of the works on the A435 from the Lilley Brook Golf Club to the Seven Springs Junction, with the road closure commencing on 20th March 2023 at 5am. Access will be maintained for residents living within the vicinity of the closure and emergency services but this will be a no through route for all other road users, including pedestrians and cyclists to ensure their safety.
There will be an official diversion route in place and diversion signage on the roadside will lead the public around the works.
Why is the work happening?
There has been a significant amount of ground movement and cracking of the road surface resulting in the southbound crawler lane being partially closed. Temporary repairs have been carried out previously, but these works are required to prevent further ground movement and maintain safety for all road users using this route in the future.
When will work start and when is completion expected?
Montel will take possession of the site on Monday 20th March and completion is expected by the end of September 2023.
When does the road closure come into effect
The full road closure will be for the full duration of the works and will come into effect from 5am on Monday 20th March.
What are the working hours, and will there be night works?
Works will be undertaken between 07.30am to 18:00pm with plant being operational from 08:00am onwards. There are no planned night works.
