June 2025
We’re pleased to share that work on the project is progressing extremely well and is now nearing completion.
As shown in the latest photographs, all surfacing works have been completed and ground monitoring equipment has been installed. We are now moving into the final phase of the project, which includes:

The team is making excellent progress, prioritising carriageway reconstruction before placing the temporary piling platform. This involves excavating and rebuilding the road along the sheet pile length to ensure a stable foundation. Permanent resurfacing will follow later in the programme.
Over the next four weeks, we’ll complete these works before installing the piling platform, which is designed to provide a stable, level surface for heavy machinery to install sheet piles at precise angles and depths.
Excitingly, the piling rig and sheet piles are expected to arrive by the end of March, marking the official start of piling operations!
April Update
A major milestone has been achieved in the project with the successful completion of the piling phase, which was carried out over a three-week period. A total of 255 metres of sheet piles have been installed, reaching depths of between 7 and 10 metres to form the sheet pile wall. The process involved pre-augering the ground, followed by the accurate installation of steel sheet piles using a vibro hammer to reach the required depths. With this phase now complete, the piling machinery has been demobilised from site.
In the next few weeks, we will:

Week commencing 24th March
We’re excited to share that the piling rig, crane, and sheet piles have now arrived on site, and we have officially begun piling operations!
This marks a significant milestone in our project as we work to stabilise the road and ensure its long-term safety for the community.
As a reminder, the road remains closed while these essential works take place. Please continue to follow the diversion route in place.

January 2025
Work officially began on-site on Monday 6th January, and we’re pleased to report that progress is well underway.
The road closure and diversion route were successfully implemented after the morning rush hour on day one, and this is continually reviewed and monitored by our specialist traffic management subcontractor.
Our permanent site offices and welfare units are being set up, and vegetation clearance is progressing well. This includes the careful removal of trees and overhanging limbs along the planned sheet pile line, following detailed ecology surveys. The tree removal has also been carried out outside of nesting season.
During the vegetation clearance, we uncovered a stone wall, which will be carefully dismantled and removed over the next week.
The operatives have also begun trial hole investigations to confirm the location of existing utilities. This is an essential step to ensure our piling works progress safely and without disruption. Trial hole investigations will continue throughout the scheme.
These steps mark an exciting start to the project as we prepare the site for sheet piling works to commence.

Montel Civil Engineering has been appointed by Gloucestershire County Council as the main contractor to undertake the geotechnical remediation works on the B4058 Rushmire Hill.
This section of the B4058 north-west of Wotton-Under-Edge has been subject to ongoing ground movement and subsidence for some time, especially within the northbound lane of the B4058. The aim of the works is to prevent further deterioration of the road and maintain safety of all road users using this route in the future.
The works will consist of:

When will works commence and how long are works expected to take?
The works will commence on Monday 6th January 2025 and are expected to take approximately 6 months, for completion early summer 2025.
Will the road remain open for traffic, pedestrians and cyclists during the construction?
Due to the construction activities required, we will be imposing a full 24 hour / 7 day a week road closure on the B4058 Rushmire Hill and Old London Road. This will be closed to all road users including cyclists and pedestrians for approximately 6 months.
Why will the road be closed?
A full road closure is necessary due to the nature of the works which includes installing up to 12-metre-long steel sheet piles. This is a large operation and due to both the size of the sheet piles and the size of the piling rig and crane used, there would not be enough space to undertake the works whilst maintaining safety for the public and the site team.
What route has been identified for a diversion?
A signed diversion route utilising B4060 (see below for map) will be implemented. The This diversion route has been selected because it is the shortest route that matches the same classification, provides similar road width, and will also be able to accommodate the same type of vehicles as the closed road. Therefore, it is suggested that the diversion route is always used for diverted traffic and the use of smaller unclassified lanes (which your sat nav may send you) are not recommended to be used and should be avoided if possible.
Will I still be able to access my home or business?
Due to the complex nature of the works no access will be available up the B4058. However, affected properties within the closure will be provided access and this will be organised by the contractor.
What will the working hours/days be?
Works will be undertaken between 07:30am and 18:00pm (dependent on the time of year) Monday to Friday. Weekend working or night works are not anticipated at this stage, however, this could be subject to change.
Will the public rights of ways still be accessible?
Due to the closure of the B4058 and Old London Road at Rushmire Hill, the adjoining public rights of way will also be temporarily closed. For detailed information, including a map outlining the affected public footpaths under the Temporary Traffic Regulation Order 2024, please visit Gloucestershire County Council’s website: https://www.gloucestershire.gov.uk/major-projects-list/geotechnical-and-structural/b4058-rushmire-hill/
