Montel Civil Engineering has been appointed by Gloucestershire County Council as the main contractor to complete Section 2 Phase 1 of the A435 Cheltenham to Bishop’s Cleeve Cycleway. This phase, from Gloucestershire and Warwickshire Steam Railway (GWSR) bridge to Bishop’s Cleeve Roundabout and Wellington Road to Centre Cross Drive is scheduled to commence on Monday 6th January, with an anticipated completion by end of Autumn 2025.
A Meet the Contractor event was held on Tuesday 26th November 2024 at Cheltenham Tigers Rugby Club. The event provided an opportunity to meet the project team from Montel, Atkins and Gloucestershire County Council, and learn more about the project and schedule of works. We’d like to thank everyone who attended and made it a successful event.

When will work start and when is completion expected?
Montel will commence works on Monday 6th January 2025 and completion is expected Autumn 2025.
What will working hours/days be?
Works will be undertaken between 07:30am and 18:00pm (dependent on the time of year) Monday to Friday, and weekend working will be required on this scheme.
Night works will also be required at different stages of the project, and it is anticipated that ‘noisy’ work such as breaking, cutting and planing of the existing carriageway will be undertaken at the start of the shifts to minimise any potential disruption caused by these activities.
Will access to my property be maintained during the works
Access to properties in the work areas should be maintained at all times. However, at times there may be short delays if we are required to move plant or machinery.
Will access to Webbs garden centre and other business be maintained on the route
Access to Webbs garden centre and other businesses on the route will be maintained throughout business operating times.
What will traffic management look like on the scheme
Traffic management will be required on this scheme. This will include lane closures for some work phases and temporary traffic signals to ensure safe and smooth running of the traffic and safety of workers.
Full road closures will also be required at times and information will be communicated to the public in advance.
Will pedestrian access be maintained?
We will aim to maintain pedestrian access throughout the works, but there may be temporary footpath closures required. In such causes, if practicable, an alternative diversion route will be provided.
What will happen during Cheltenham Racecourse events?
Cheltenham Racecourse events have been factored into the planned construction programme and measures will be taken so that works during these events are either stopped or reduced to ensure that as little disruption us caused as possible. The usual event traffic and pedestrian management will be in place throughout these events.
